Welcome to the Land of the Rabbits

The etymology of "Spain" is uncertain, but the root may be I-Shpania, a Phoenician word meaning "land of the rabbits." Thus the name of this blog.

Today Karen and I are escaping a blizzard of potentially historic proportions. Our destination is the Land of the Rabbits, where we will take a road trip with our friends Tom and Michele, who will be driving over from their home in the south of France.

We will spend a few days on our own in San Sebastian and Bilbao before Tom and Michele roll into town to pick us up. After two weeks, they will drop us off in Madrid, where we will again spend a few days on our own. In between, the four of us will visit Salamanca, Caceres, Merida, Sevilla, Ronda, Granada, Cordoba, and Toledo. I fully expect to injure myself at some point by falling down a flight of ancient, irregular stone stairs.

On the way home, we'll stop off in Amsterdam to see a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit of paintings by Vermeer. If you're a Vermeer fan and wish you could come with us,
this presentation -- hosted by the British actor Stephen Fry -- is the next best thing.
