Guggenheim Bilbao: Richard Serra's "The Matter of Time"

Come see this traveling exhibit before it leaves the museum!

(Just kidding, of course.)

The verbiage surrounding Serra's sculptures, both by the artist himself and by his critics, is annoyingly pretentious. Nevertheless I enjoy looking at and being in the presence of these monumental, curving, oxidized slabs of steel. As Karen observed, the experience of the work is interactive. It asks you to engage by walking around it or going inside it.

The enormous room that houses this work is one of the most remarkable museum spaces I have ever visited. Whether monumental, curving, oxidized slabs of steel ought to occupy outdoor public spaces is a separate question...

Be warned, though:

Don't you dare get frisky inside a Serra sculpture!
